REVISED plans are being considered for a stalled housing development on the site of the former Marchesi House at Southill, Weymouth.

Work stopped after demolition of the home for older people with local concerns raised about a safe access to the site, off Poplar Close.

Bournemouth Churches Housing Association had originally planned to build 18 affordable homes and 13 flats for rent and shared ownership in a scheme said to cost £4.5m at the time it was first proposed in 2020.

It was claimed last year that delays caused by problems over site access, together with rising building costs could put the project at risk, but a new application for up to 26 homes has now been submitted to Dorset Council and is out to public consultation.

Application papers show ten 1-bed units, eight 2-bed and three 3-bed listed as ‘social, affordable or intermediate rent’ with one 2-bed unit and four 3-bed homes for “affordable home ownership.”

Only one block of flats is now proposed for the site, relocated to the lowest part of the 0.4 hectare plot, with West Dorset builders, CG Fry & Son to carry out the development for the housing association.

The proposed development includes a mix of one bedroom apartments and one, two and three bed houses which are all a mix of shared ownership and affordable rent with the only vehicle access off Poplar Close and a pedestrian and cycle access from the west of the site off Radipole Lane.

Public comments on the proposals can be made until mid-June on the Dorset Council planning website – reference 2024/02254.
