Explosive live tank displays are coming to the Tank Museum from this weekend.

From Saturday May 25 until Sunday June 2 the museum based in Bovington will be showcasing its armoury, including 'funny' tanks and will have a host of D-Day inspired activities for visitors to enjoy.

Claire Cooper, education officer at the Tank Museum said: “This June marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the invasion of Normandy by British, Canadian, and American troops, often seen as the beginning of the end of World War Two.

“The run-up to D-Day saw careful planning, use of espionage, and the development of special vehicles to combat the unique challenges faced by the Allies – named ‘the Funnies’.”

Tanks played a key role in the invasion, and visitors can dress-up, enjoy trails and crafts alongside the D-Day ‘funny’ tanks that were adapted to clear mines, destroy concrete defences, and even swim.

Claire added: “There is a packed programme for the whole family. Kids can put their messaging skills to the test with the morse code machine, float a tank on water, and explore new D-Day Deception themed trails.”

Visitors will also be able to ride in a Cold War troop carrier, meet the tank crews, and get hands-on building brick D-Day vehicles with Cobi.

Kids can enjoy free themed colouring activities at the craft station, let off steam in the museum’s soft play area, and get adventurous on the outside tank-themed adventure play area.
