Twenty people, split into two groups, took part in the Abseil for Weldmar challenge on the cliffs of Portland.

Dorset Echo: One of the two abseiling groups involved in the challenge for Weldmar Hospicecare raising more thanThe sun was shining on the group who raised more than £6,000 for the hospice care charity. Weldmar provides specialist care for adults in Dorset with a life limiting illness, as well as support for their loved ones.

Brave participant Mandy thought the experience was amazing. She said: “It was terrifying but amazing, you’ve got to do it.

“You’ve got to remember it is for a good cause anytime you do it, and the challenge is done now- It was amazing and I would do it again, one hundred per cent.”

Friends and supporters of the charity, Selena and Leyla, said: “We do as many challenges as we can for Weldmar, we’ve been supporting Weldmar for about 10 years now.

“This was a new challenge, and well done Weldmar, this has definitely pushed us out of our comfort zones.”

On the day, the participants were guided by Alex and James from the team at Adventure4All, who partnered with the charity for the challenge.

Company director, Alex Sergison, said: “The bravery and determination shown by participants this weekend was second to none.

“This was a big a scary task. Thank you to all who showed up and took it on. Massive thanks to Weldmar for giving us opportunity to work with them and the amazing service they continue to provide.”

Also present at the challenge was the charity’s fundraising team to offer support and encouragement for those taking part.

Eden Fraser said: “I am extremely proud of all of our abseilers who pushed themselves to do something they hadn’t done before, all in aid of raising money for Weldmar Hospicecare.

“Many of the supporters taking part have personal connections to the charity and it was the knowledge of doing it for a good cause that gave them the extra encouragement to go over the edge and complete the abseil. It was a great day and we look forward to doing holding more abseiling events in the future.”

The charity’s next big challenge to mark its 30th anniversary is a skydive on Friday, June 14.
