Installation of new bike racks in Weymouth has begun - and is expected to be finished by summer.

A new bike rack has been installed at Oakbury Drive with work starting at Louviers Road and The Marsh.

This follows an announcement in March by Weymouth Town Council that £18k in funding would be used to install more bike racks in parts of the town.

They will also be installed along the promenade, Greenhill, Wyke Playing Fields and the Nothe Park and Lodmoor playing field.

A spokesperson for Weymouth Town Council said: "Back in March we announced that funding of £18,000 will be used to install more racks to store bicycles and children’s scooters in certain parts of the town. Bike racks have now been installed at Oakbury Drive with work starting at Louviers Road and The Marsh."

These are 'Sheffield Racks', which are metal arches which bikes and scooters can be attached to for safety.

Money for the racks comes from the Community Infrastructure Levy fund, a charge which can be levied by councils on new development in their area.

It’s hoped the idea behind providing more facilities for cyclists and scooters will help promote healthy lifestyles.

Once the racks have been received, the new facilities will be installed by the summer.

The plans were created after concerns were raised about areas in the town where scooters and bicycles were often left dumped on the ground or tied to barriers on the seafront.
