A major road has been closed both ways due to a two-vehicle crash near Winterbourne Abbas. 

Dorset Police received a report at 2.14pm that two vehicles had crashed on the A35 near The Coach House Inn. 

One of the vehicles came off the road and fell into a ditch. 

Police officers were in attendance at the scene as well as fire crews and the ambulance service.

The crash caused heavy traffic both ways and a road closure was in place from the petrol station in Winterbourne Abbas to Long Bredy Hut Lane. The road has now re-opened.

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said: "We were called at 2.14pm to a report of a two vehicle collision on the A35 near to Winterbourne Abbas.

"Location is described as approximately two miles after Winterbourne Abbas toward Bridport.

"Officers in attendance with fire and ambulance services.

"Road closures are in place and we would ask motorists to please seek alternative routes. Thank you for your patience and understanding." 

A spokesperson for Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue service said: "The A35 is closed at Winterbourne Abbas following a road traffic collision. Crews from Dorchester and Bridport are in attendance.

"The incident is on-going, we were called to the A35 at Winterbourne Abbas at 2.19pm today after a car left the road and ended up in a ditch.

"We have two crews in attendance, from Dorchester and Bridport. The road is currently closed in both directions."
