Dorset is set to feature on the British archaeology programme, Time Team.
The latest episodes of Time Team, due out next week, is based at Wytch Farm, near Corfe Castle, and will feature Bournemouth University’s Dr Derek Pitman and Dr Lawrence Shaw as presenters.
Dr Pitman is the head of the department of archaeology and anthropology, and Dr Shaw is aa visiting research fellow at BU and lead historic environment advisor for Forestry England.
As reported by the Echo, the dig took place at the site in Purbeck, near to the impressive ruins of Corfe Castle where the pair discovered two Iron Age burials back in 2021 and will look to shed light on what could be hiding under the soil, and what it might tell us about the history of the region and the people who lived there.
The dig will be covered in three parts on the Time Team YouTube channel, day one: Friday, May 17 at 7pm, day two: Saturday, May 18 at 7pm, and day three, Sunday, May 19 at 7pm.
Dr Pitman said: “Ever since we first discovered the site I have wanted to go back and do a full investigation. It was a dream come true to bring the might of Time Team to our project and the discoveries were truly amazing! Purbeck has a huge, hidden archaeological story and I love that we get to share that with the world”.
Dr Shaw added: “It was also an honour to host Time Team’s 30th birthday celebration and bring together the team, old and new. The site is very special and gives a unique window into Iron Age and Roman life in Dorset”.
The programmes will mark the 30th anniversary of the show and will feature other BU students and academics who will help to excavate and examine the finds at the site.
