A meme aping a humorous exchange between David and Victoria Beckham has gone viral on Weymouth social media pages.
The Weymouth version of the ‘Be Honest’ meme pokes fun at the difference between living in Littlemoor and Preston and of those who say they live in Preston Downs.
It has seen 150,000 views alone on the Dorset Echo’s Facebook group ‘We Grew Up in Weymouth and Portland.’
The hilarious Weymouth meme references David Beckham’s recent Netflix documentary ‘Beckham’, in which the former footballer jokes with his wife Victoria after she is a little ‘liberal’ with the truth.
In it, Victoria, AKA Posh Spice, jokes about being ‘working class’ and is adamant that her upbringing was just as humble as her husband’s.
Speaking to the camera for the documentary, she says of her family: “We’re very working class,” only for David’s head to pop out from behind a door as he sternly interrupts: “Be honest." She replies: “Uh, I am being honest.”
David repeatedly urging her to tell the truth. He then asks: “What car did your dad drive you to school in?”
After some dancing around the subject Victoria eventually admits that in the 80s her dad drove her to school in none other than a Rolls-Royce.
The meme has sparked plenty of debate among Weymouth residents – especially the thorny issue of living in ‘Preston Downs’.
Denise Bryant said: "I always say this to people..... up to the bridge and down to just before Goulds Garden Centre, everything in between is Littlemoor.
"I don't care that the area has been pretentiously called Preston Downs or Lodmoor Sands - you are all still in Littlemoor."
In reference to the new housing development being built in the Littlemoor area, one reader joked: “Not forgetting it’ll soon be ‘I live in Bincombe Park.”
A taxi driver, ‘Dexter Dexter’, noted the disparity between the two areas.
He said: "It was great fun when people got in the taxi and said ’Preston Down’.
"I did ask specifically if it’s Littlemoor but no, it's Preston Down.
"So when we arrived I was charging the metered fare, not Littlemoor special, and straight away it was Littlemoor again."
The discussion also veered onto the complications around where exactly Littlemoor starts and ends.
Elaine King said: "We Live in Broadwey. The area before the church is classed as Broadwey.
"Littlemoor starts from the shopping precinct... Littlemoor ends just before Preston Downs as such. Look at the old maps."
Adding to the debate, people have spoken of their fond memories growing up in Littlemoor.
Ronald Rutter said: "I lived in Littlemoor back in the 60s. It was a lovely place to live surrounded by farms and great growing up there."
Substantial pride is evident among the residents of Littlemoor, with Elizabeth Armstrong advocating for being proud of one's roots.
She said: "Be proud of who you are and where you are from, it makes you."
Tom Davies further echoed these sentiments, expressing: "I was born in Littlemoor and very much proud of it."
And finally, flying the flag for Littlemoor is none other than comedian and presenter Alan Carr.
He spent some of his childhood living in Littlemoor and has gone on to one of Britain's most successful and most loved comedians.
