Three Dorset-based arts groups have been awarded grants by Weymouth Town Council.

The council has handed out thousands of pounds as part of its Community Grants scheme which aims at benefiting worthy community, voluntary and charitable organisations in the local area.

Organisations that work with communities in Weymouth are able to apply for a grant to help fund new projects, equipment, events or training.

Artists group Artwey has received £3,000 to go towards an art trail that will run through the town centre.

It will see 15 across the town where artwork will be exhibited to coincide with its 15th anniversary and be focused around the theme of peace.

The group is a not-for-profit community of artists based in Weymouth, Portland and Dorchester and promotes art and artists in the community.

Another £3,000 has been awarded to the Wessex Folk Festival to go towards their annual festival in Weymouth.

The event encourages, promotes and supports live performance of music and dance and will take place on June 1 and 2.

The third group to be awarded money by the town council is Bournemouth-based theatre group Doppelganger Productions.

It will receive a sliding scale of support dependant on the number of events it holds in Weymouth.

The groups aim is to create a 50 plus member production company from a mix of local professional artists and residents to encourage an inter generational project to tour Dorset in August.
