Weymouth and Portland business leaders are looking to the future after a challenging year in 2023.
Members of the Weymouth and Portland Chamber of Commerce (WPCC) gathered for their annual general meeting (AGM) to discuss growing the chamber, and to welcome co-owner of Oliveto, Dominique Manasseri, as its new Vice President.
Last year, the chamber encountered several unexpected expenses that impacted its finances, which related to necessary updates in its infrastructure and adjustments in how it operates.
The chamber says that the expenses were for increased operational costs and the 'urgent need' for a new website.
Whilst the increased financial burden was not a welcome one, it provided the chamber with some key insights and learning opportunities for the future.
It is now focused on improving its operational efficiency and refining its engagement strategies.
By doing so, it aims to ensure its resources are utilized in the most effective way possible, paving the way for improved financial stability and community engagement.
Mrs Manasseri is looking forward to taking up her new role to help tackle the challenges the town's business sector faces.
She said: "As I step into my new role as Vice President of the Weymouth Chamber of Commerce, I am acutely aware of the concerns that many of you share about the challenges facing our town and the uncertainty about our collective future.
"Growing up in Weymouth, this town is not just a place on the map for me; it's where my heart is. I understand the apprehensions that come with change and the questions that loom over our future.
"Our agenda for the coming year is packed with networking events and initiatives aimed not just at growth, but at fostering a sense of security and support within our community
She added: "Together, we can make big things happen. Your support, insights, and participation are crucial as we navigate these times. Let's harness our collective strengths to not only safeguard the future of Weymouth but to shape it into one we can all be proud of.
"Our journey ahead is filled with potential, and with every step, we will build a stronger, more vibrant community."
Despite the challenges that arose from 2023, the organisation is looking to 'rejuvenate' itself, according to the chamber's treasurer, Sam Russell.
He added: “After completing my first year as treasurer of WPCC, I’m looking forward to a successful second year ahead and being part of the effort to rejuvenate the chamber which is being pioneered by my fellow executive members."
President Paul Appleby was also re-elected as the chamber's President for a third consecutive year, at the AGM held at Oliveto on Weymouth seafront.
Mr Appleby, said “It is such an honour to be voted President for a third consecutive year in such amazing surroundings.
"I was very pleased with the number of members who attended. There is a lot of energy for the Chamber in 2024 and we're very much looking forward to welcoming members and guests to our first breakfast of 2024 on March 14 at Oliveto”.
