A GRUELLING coastal walk and a cut of very long hair are helping to raise money for some very worthy causes.
Weymouth College staff members Neil Carter and Alan Lawrence say they will be supporting the RNLI, The Little Princess Trust and The Veterans Hub of Wyke Regis, Weymouth, by undertaking fundraising activities.
To mark the 200th anniversary of the RNLI, security officer Neil will be embarking on a 30 mile walk from Lyme Regis to Weymouth.
Mr Carter hopes to raise £1,000 in honour of his family relatives who have worked at sea and the volunteers of the RNLI who save lives at sea.
His journey will start at Lyme Regis Lifeboat Station in the early morning, and will see him walking along the coastal path to West Bay. He will continue on to Chesil Beach for 18 miles to Ferrybridge, before joining the Rodwell Trail, Belle Vue and The Nothe, finishing at Weymouth Lifeboat Station.
Meanwhile, Alan Lawrence, chief instructor at Weymouth College’s activity centre - Weymouth & Portland Adventure – is raising funds for two charities with a sponsored haircut.
His 26 inches of hair were chopped off by one of the college’s Level 3 Hairdressing students, and will be donated to The Little Princess Trust, supporting children undergoing cancer treatment.
He has also launched a fundraising appeal for both The Little Princess Trust and The Veterans Hub, a local community project that provides a safe place and support for armed forces veterans and their families.
He said: “I've chosen the Little Princess Trust because I know how much hair can make a difference to a person and I love the idea that I can donate something of myself to make life a little easier for someone out there facing a truly awful situation.
“The Veterans Hub is an incredible local charity that provides a variety of much needed support and services.
"Working alongside an ex-Royal Marine and through airsoft, I've met so many amazing and inspiring current and ex-serving men and women, I want to give something back to the veteran community and show my gratitude and appreciation.”
