A section of Weymouth Relief Road has been closed by police.
The road, the busy A354, has been closed between the Veasta Roundabout, near Sainsburys, and the Jurassic Roundabout, near Littlemoor.
An eyewitness says that a police car is blocking the Veasta Roundabout and that cars are being turned around.
This will undoubtedly be causing congestion during evening rush-hour.
The Echo understands that this is a 'concern for welfare' incident centred around the Littlemoor Road bridge.
A picture from the scene shows fire engines on the Littlemoor Road bridge with that section of the road closed to traffic as emergency services deal with the incident.
A spokesperson for Dorset Police said: "At 4.41pm on Monday, February 19, we received a report of the concern for the welfare of a woman on the bridge over the Jurassic Roundabout in Bincombe.
"Officers are in attendance, as well as the ambulance and fire services. The road is currently closed both ways."
Later that evening, Dorset Police confirmed the person had been brought to safety and the roads were reopened.
A spokesperson for Dorset Police said: "The woman was brought to safety at around 6.10pm and taken to receive the appropriate care. Road closures were subsequently lifted."
