A group of traditional Dorset singers and musicians will be performing in Upwey.
The Ridgeway Singers and Band (RSB) will be performing a concert at St Laurence Church, Upwey, on March 3.
The performance will bring a celebration of local songs and music, and is titled “Fare Thee Well, Cold Winter”.
RSB was formed by Artsreach over ten years ago to explore the musical traditions of the South Dorset Ridgeway.
Since then they have gone from strength to strength, with regular performances in and around the area.
Led by serpent player, Phil Humphries and folk musician, actor and storyteller, Tim Laycock, RSB consists of talented local singers and musicians, concentrating on authentic performance of the area’s traditional music.
The afternoon will showcase a special programme of Dorset music, stories and poems to celebrate the coming of spring.
In a nod to the locality it will highlight Marina Russell, the fine Upwey singer who contributed so many songs to the Hammond brothers, when they came collecting in the early 20th century, of which “Fare Thee Well, Cold Winter” is one.
It will also include tunes from the surviving manuscript book of Richard Luckham, the miller at Broadwey in 1850, who played the flute.
The event is presented by Upwey Music, a registered charity which promotes and supports musical performance in Upwey. and will start at 3.30pm.
Tickets are £12, or £6 for under 18s and are available from ticketsource.co.uk by searching 'Upwey' or can be bought on the door with cash or from 07960 471170.
