HUNDREDS of 'dinosaurs' will be running across Weymouth Beach tomorrow.

Weymouth’s first ever Chase the Dinosaur fun run event is set to take place tomorrow (Saturday, February 10) from 11am.

This is a new event for the town - organised by the Weymouth BID and supporting the local Will Mackaness Trust - which is expected to provide a big boost for the town outside of the main season.

It coincides with the launch of the BID's new interactive dinosaur trail.

This unique and fun-filled run invites participants of all ages to don their favourite dinosaur costumes and 'embark on a thrilling journey' chasing a dinosaur along the beach.

The weather is forecast to be slightly cloudy at 10am with a less than five per cent chance of rain - so organisers are very optimistic that it will go ahead, however if anything changes, they will share an announcement on the day.

Dawn Rondeau-Irvine, Chief Operations Officer for We Are Weymouth (BID) said: “What better way to celebrate our Jurassic heritage than to bring dinosaurs to Weymouth beach.

“Chase the Dinosaur will kick off our dinosaur season here in Weymouth, with the launch of the very first dinosaur beach run alongside a new interactive augmented reality (AI) dinosaur trail throughout the town.

“We’re very proud to raise funds for local charity, the Will Mackaness Trust, and look forward to seeing dinosaurs of all ages on the beach.

“We hope to make this a legacy event which will see dinosaurs travelling from far and wide for a weekend of Jurassic fun. This year’s dino experience is the pre-cursor for much bigger dinosaur plans in 2025.”

The prehistoric-themed event will start from the Pavilion end of Weymouth Beach and will include three races, a 5km for adults, a 2km for under 16s and a 1km for under 11s.

The all-exciting prize for winners is the chance to be the dinosaur who will be chased next year.

The Will-Mackaness Trust was set up in 2008 after Will, an avid sportsman who took a full and active part in all aspects of school life, died from a brain tumour.

One of Will’s passions was water sports especially windsurfing, and the trust’s aim is to give more water sport opportunities to the young people of Weymouth and Portland, so they too, can experience the fun and exhilaration of windsurfing, sailing, paddle boarding and kayaking for themselves.

The AI dinosaur trail on the other hand is a free, family outdoor adventure which will see 10 superpowered Dino-creatures hidden inside eggs nearby.

Simply scan the QR codes, displayed at locations nearby, to collect digital stamps and play.

The characters will burst to life in augmented reality and there is also the chance to win a digital fun-pack at the end.

Tickets to take part in the fun run are £5 for children and £10 for adults and can be purchased here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/everybody-chase-the-dinosaur-tickets-802942541757.
