Train passengers travelling between Dorchester South and Wool were hit by delays and cancellations due to a signalling problem.
Disruption had been expected to end at 11.00am yesterday but was later revised to 1pm.
Trains were unable to run between Weymouth and Wool. Passengers wishing to travel to stations between Wool and Weymouth were told to travel to Wareham for onward transport.
SWR requested replacement buses to run between Wareham and Weymouth, calling at all stations.
A spokesperson for South Western Railway said: "We have been informed of a signalling problem between Wool and Dorchester South. This means that trains are unable to run between these stations.
"For further information or onward travel advice please speak to a member of staff or use a station help point.
"We are very sorry for any delay that this may cause to your journey."
