Development work on a Weymouth Park is now “taking shape”, with some new features due for completion at the end of the month.

Located off Radipole Park Drive and running alongside the RSPB Swannery nature reserve, Radipole Park and Gardens is currently undergoing renovation work which will include the instalment of a new refreshment kiosk, play area, sensory garden, and toilet facilities.

The Kiosk building and raised decking area is due to be completed at the end of February. There will also be three permanent toilets added.

The work began in summer last year following a £1 million donation from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to Weymouth Town Council.

The council have been working closely with the Friends of Radipole Park & Gardens volunteer group to redevelop and make improvements to the park.

Cllr Ryan Hope, Chair of Environment and Services Committee, said: "It's great to see how much progress has been made on the enhancements to Radipole Park and Gardens, which will be enjoyed for generations to come once completed.

“I’d like to add my thanks to the Friends of Radipole Park and Gardens, and the National Lottery Heritage Fund for working with Weymouth Town Council on this project.”

Sue Hogben, Co-Chair Friends of Radipole Park & Gardens, shares her excitement for the recent developments after a period of setbacks.

“It’s been a long time in the making as they say. First covid, after that huge price rises which meant we had to revise the plans and resubmit to the lottery board for approval before we could start.

“Then came a prolonged spell of extreme wet weather, making the site a bit boggy for the contractors. Watching the play park, new recreational areas and café rise from the ground had been exciting to say the least. It feels as if we’re nearly at the end of the roller coaster at last.”

Other enhancements include a new path across the amenity grass area, relocated and resurfaced multi-use games area, interpretation boards showing the park's history, a new area for playing Pétanque, new outdoor table tennis tables, and an orienteering course.

Due to wet weather in previous months, all the landscape elements of the project are now due to be completed at the end of March.

Weymouth Town Council also confirmed an official opening event is being planned, alongside a full programme of activities and events for the summer.
