COASTGUARD and lifeboat teams were called to a kitesurfer 'in difficulty' off the Dorset coast.

A team from Portland Bill Coastguard, as well as Weymouth RNLI, responded to a report of a kitesurfer in Portland Harbour who may have been in trouble.

The kitesurfer was able to make it back to shore themselves.

A spokesperson for Portland Bill Coastguard Team said: "Team tasked by Solent Coastguard along with Weymouth Inshore Lifeboat, to a report of a kitesurfer in difficulty in Portland Harbour.

"On scene the kitesurfer was found to be making their own way back to shore; once back on the shore a welfare check was conducted.

"The kitesurfer confirmed they were fit and well and that the wind had dropped and was unable to get the kite back into the air.

"This was a false alarm with good intent, all assets stood down and returned to their stations."
