Roadworks which have caused weeks of disruption on a busy Weymouth route are finally set to end.

Two-way traffic lights have been in place on Littlemoor Road, Weymouth for weeks as engineers from SGN worked to repair a 30-metre stretch of a gas main damaged by a third party.

These traffic lights have been a source of significant disruption over the past few weeks, causing tailbacks in both directions.

Work to replace the gas main was completed on Friday, January 19 however, the lights will remain in place whilst the road surface is restored.

SGN originally said that it hopes to have the work completed by Friday and in a later statement, early this week. A spokesperson has now confirmed that the road is planned to be back to normal on Wednesday.

Waseem Hanif, spokesperson for gas distribution company SGN said: "We successfully replaced a 30-metre section of our gas network in Littlemoor Road, Weymouth, on Friday, January 19.

"For safety, temporary two-way traffic lights remain in place in Littlemoor Road, between its junctions with Louviers Road and Turnstone Close. The lights are needed so we can finish safely restoring the road surface before the road can reopen.

"All going well, we'll be able to reopen the road as normal on Wednesday, January 24.

"We'd like to thank Weymouth residents and motorists for your continued patience and support throughout this work."

Yesterday, these lights contributed to the massive tailbacks as far as Preston Road following a serious crash near Chalbury Corner.
