Performing arts students in Weymouth will be joining a contemporary touring dance company on stage this February.
Students from Weymouth College will be given instruction from the University of Chichester’s MA touring company, mapdance, when they perform in Dorset on Wednesday February 21.
They will attend a workshop with the company before hosting their own ‘curtain raiser’ performance. Afterwards, mapdance will perform their 2024 show at The Bay Theatre, at Weymouth College’s Cranford Avenue campus.
Seth Turner-Higgins, Head of Curriculum & Skills for Performing Arts at Weymouth College said: “Having the opportunity to work alongside professionals ensures that students have the most up to date access the skills required to prepare them for their own careers.
“In this workshop, students will be learning elements of choreography that they will see in the evening show. They will also be preparing a pre-show performance ( curtain raiser) with the company. This will be performed at the start of the main evening programme.”
Mapdance is an established, contemporary dance company whose last national tour included new works by choreographers Kay Crook, Seeta Patel and Luke Brown, and a re-staging of Gary Clarke's piece ‘On Your Marks’, created especially for the company.
This year, the company has commissioned new works by Yukiko Masui (SAY), Renaud Wiser and Carrie Whitaker (Lîla Dance), as well as re-staging Sarah Golding's work 'STATE'.
The repertory offers a mixture of dance theatre, fast-paced athleticism, lyrical choreography and humour.
The mapdance 2024 performance with a ‘curtain raiser’ by Weymouth College students will be held at the Bay Theatre on Friday, February 21 at 7.30pm.
Tickets cost £16 for adults or £14 for concessions and are available to book at www.ticketsource.co.uk/thebaytheatre or by calling the box office 01305 208702.
