From the outside, Syd Blackmore's Weymouth home looks no different to any other on his road.

Go through his front door on King Street, however, and you find out why his grandchildren refer to him as 'mad grandad Syd' - and he's Mr Christmas to everyone else.

Syd's entire home is festooned with Christmas decorations - and it's December 25 every day inside.

There is a permanent display of around 12,000 lights, 10 Christmas trees, more than 4,000 baubles, and 100 cuddly toys, not to mention the 6ft 6ins Santa mannequin in the bathroom.

The 69-year-old, who says he has a 'terrible collecting streak' is so determined to share festive goodwill year-round that he is even holding a Christmas party in August.

And he uses his love of Christmas to bring joy to others - putting on a Christmas Day dinner for people with nowhere else to go.

Syd, a blacksmith, roofing contractor and owner of Weymouth Reclamation, has lived on King Street for the past four years.

His collection started two and a half years ago when a friend suffering with mental health difficulties remarked that nobody had ever given her a proper Christmas.

Syd said: "I did all this for a young lady who I have known for six years.

"She said to me that no one has ever given her a Christmas so I thought I would bring Christmas here.

"I have got a terrible collecting streak. I really enjoy it. It's all done on a shoestring."

After years of collecting Syd says he is finally happy with his collection.

Around 90 per cent of it comes from the charity shop, and many people have donated to his collection.

Syd doesn't only collect Christmas decorations. His abode also features 4,000 old pictures of Weymouth and Portland, 4,000 board games, not to mention Spice Girls and monarchy memorabilia.

Syd added: "This year I had four people over for Christmas dinner who had nowhere else to go.

"One was planning to have a sandwich, and another lived alone and couldn't pay the bills. So I invited them in and made them dinner.

Syd sleeps in a 'sleigh' taken up almost entirely by cuddly toys and has a collection of costumes from Santa to elves.

He said: "People come in the summer and ask 'why don't you take them down'. I say I love it. I will have a Christmas party in August, I just love it. It is not coming down, it is staying up forever.

"It is the first thing people see, they say 'oh my god'. And to see their faces... especially the kids.

"You have got to see it to believe it, but people enjoy it."
