Hundreds of Santas will descend on Weymouth Beach as a popular event makes a return.

The Chase the Pudding fun run is set to take place today - Sunday, December 17, from 11am.

Those taking part dress as Father Christmas and chase a Christmas pudding along Weymouth Beach from the pavilion to the Pier Bandstand and back in aid of a fantastic charity.

For those under 16, there is also a 2km Chase the Elf event.

Proceeds from the much-loved event go to the Will Mackaness Trust which was set up in 2008 following Will’s death.

Will was an avid sportsman with a particular passion for windsurfing and following his battle with a brain tumour, the charity aims to give more water sport opportunities to the youngsters of Weymouth and Portland, so they too, can experience the fun of different water sports.

Pam Govier, Will’s mum, is one of the organisers.

She said: “It warms me that people are there and come along to support the trust and that Will’s name is being remembered.

“People come along to watch all the Santas run along the beach, it’s just so seasonal and brings a lot of joy – it particularly brings me joy.

“It’s good to do something that the town looks forward to and gets behind.

“It’s also lovely to see the youngsters take part in the Chase the Elf event.”

Despite last year’s bad weather, the event raised around £1,000, which went towards a new ‘fleet of foil boards’ for the trust.

Pam explained that they had received a £3,000 grant from the Dorset Hero Awards, and a £6,000 grant from the #WillDoes charity which they were also able to put towards the new boards.

She said: “It allowed us to have this really good fleet of foil boards for the trust.”

Next year, the trust is celebrating 10 years since they took over the fun run and Pam is certain that it will be a ‘big one.’

Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Kate Wheller said: "I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone dressed up in their Santa outfits for the Chase the Pudding races this weekend.

"I'll be there cheering on the competitors in what is always such a fantastic spectacle on our award-winning beach. The money raised will also go to such a worthy local cause."

Entry is £20 if a Santa suit is needed, or £15 without a suit and every penny raised will go directly to the charity. Online registration closes tomorrow, Friday, December 15.
