Two young Dorchester singers will be taking solo parts in a Christmas concert by Dorchester Choral Society.
“From Darkness to Light” will be performed in St Mary’s church, Edward Road at 7:30pm on Saturday, December 9.
The concert will include music by Purcell, Bruckner, and Buxtehude. The second part of the programme is devoted to Schütz’s charming re-telling of the Christmas story featuring familiar characters from the Nativity singing alongside the choir.
The part of the Angel Gabriel will be played by Lily Barrett, a sixth former at Thomas Hardye School, in her first classical choral concert.
Stefan Oakes will sing the part of King Herod. He is a former student of Thomas Hardye school who is beginning to forge a singing career as a bass/baritone.
They will be joined by an old friend of the Society, professional baritone Hugh Hetherington, who will be the Evangelist (the narrator) of the piece. Other ensemble roles will be taken by choir members.
Colin Howard, Director of Music, said: “As a choir we always try to help young singers and to use local professional musicians wherever possible.
"This programme brings these elements together and, as an added bonus, we are also able to showcase the singing talents of our choir members.”
Jane Howard, Dorchester Choral Society Chair, added: “This concert has it all. There will wonderful music that takes us on a journey from sombre reflection through to a joyful celebration of the Nativity – it is certain to generate a feel-good factor. “
Tickets are £15 and can be bought from the TicketSource website.
