A bridge in Weymouth was closed and cordoned off for six hours after a concern for welfare was raised for two women.

A major emergency response was called to Westham Bridge in Weymouth this morning, with four police cars, two ambulances, three fire service vehicles and two coastguard vehicles on the scene.

Police divers and Search and Rescue Teams were also seen at the bridge.

Police received a report raising concern for the welfare of two females in the area at around 2.28 am this morning (Wednesday, November 15).

Officers located one of the females safe and well and set up a cordon whilst they tried to engage with the second female.

One of the females was taken to hospital by the ambulance service.

The cordon was lifted at around 8.30am.

At around 8.15am, a spokesperson for Dorset Police said: "Dorset Police received a report at 2.28am on Wednesday, November 15, raising concern for the welfare of two females in the area of Westham Bridge in Weymouth.

"Officers have attended and one of the females was located safe and well.

"Officers are continuing efforts to engage with the other female and a cordon has been put in place as a precaution.

"We would like to thank members of the public for their patience and understanding while the cordon is in place."

At around 9am police confirmed that the second female was taken to safety and was being given appropriate care.

Police said other emergency services responded "as a precaution".

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called to support a police incident at Westham Bridge, Weymouth at 4.33am this morning.

"A crew and a technical rescue team from Weymouth attended."

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) said: “We were called at 02.35am on Wednesday, November 15, to an incident in Weymouth.

"We sent two double-crewed land ambulances and conveyed one patient by land ambulance to hospital.”
