Severe flooding has caused the northbound carriageway of the A37 to close at Stratton
Delays ae expected on the stretch of A37 north of Dorchester near The Railway Bridge.
A spokesperson for Dorset Council, said: "We're hoping to get temporary traffic measures in place to reopen one lane, but the conditions are challenging.
"We recommend finding an alternative route or delaying your journey if possible."
The flood water brought on by the heavy rainfall from Storm Ciaran has caused several roads to close across the county, including part of the A3030 near Sherborne and the Portland Beach Road.
Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue are advising people do not travel as more wind and rain is expected.
A spokesperson said: "Strong winds and rain are expected to continue throughout today across our service area.
"Please don't travel if you don't need to, and be particularly cautious in coastal areas - the size and strength of the waves are far greater during storm conditions.
