To celebrate Dorchester’s haunted history, the town is looking to break a spooky world record this Halloween.

People are invited to take part by donning a white sheet and becoming a ghost in a bid to smash the world record attempt for most people gathered together dressed as ghosts.

Dorchester has always had rumours of ghostly goings that have spanned centuries, with a wave of sightings seen over the years from Roman soldiers to the chilling Judge Jeffreys, but now locals have the chance to be a ghost themselves.

Discover Dorchester in partnership with Brewery Square is planning to bring together all its ghosts and ghouls on Saturday, October 28 at 4.30pm.

The current record stands at 560 and is held by Mercy School Mounthawk, in Tralee, Ireland.

The town is hoping to smash this target, gathering hundreds of ghosts in Brewery Square for an evening of spooktacular fun.

To participate, ghosts are asked to gather in Brewery Square dressed in a white sheet for the official count at 4.30pm.

On top of being part of ghoulish history, Brewery Square is hosting an array of family-friendly fun to keep children of all ages entertained including a disco, pumpkin carving, balloon modelling, stilt walkers and even trick or treat.

Matilda Manley, Dorchester Tourism Development Officer, said: “Dorchester has long been known for its array of ghosts and horrible histories. This Halloween half term was the perfect time to celebrate this and bring all our ghosts together in one spot.

“We’re urging ghosts and ghouls of all ages to join us in Brewery Square for our world record attempt - we’re very confident we’re going to get the numbers to smash the record and put Dorchester on the supernatural map,” she added.

The organisers are encouraging all attendees to head to the Facebook Group to register interest in this ghostly gathering.

Tara Bailey, Centre Manager at Brewery Square said: “Brewery Square sits at the heart of the community in Dorchester, bringing together old and new, multiples and independents - it’s a real hive of activity.

"We’re excited to support this spooktacular event, offering something for all the family whilst supporting our local Dorchester economy.  After speaking with the local community, local schools and local businesses, we’re excited to break the ghost world record attempt - adding to Dorchester’s ghoulish reputation!”
