A resident has told of her shock after a dramatic late-night crash which saw multiple cars wrecked and thousands of pounds worth of damage caused.
A car driving up Radipole Lane in Southill, Weymouth ploughed into a parked vehicle on the side of the road which in turn was shunted over to a neighbouring drive and hit three other parked cars.
The car which ploughed into the first one was spun around by the impact and hit a car on the other side of the road. A witness described seeing the airbags inflated and smoke coming from the car.
Residents came out of their homes to witness a scene of devastation. Amazingly, police said no-one was seriously injured.
A man reported to be the driver of the car was arrested on suspicion of committing a number of offences.
The crash happened in the early hours of Saturday, October 14 on the stretch of Radipole Lane between Chafeys Avenue and Mayfield Close.
An owner of one of the vehicles involved in the smash said: “We were about to go to bed and heard a really loud bang. My husband went outside to investigate - he called me out and told me to phone an ambulance.
“There was a car in the middle of the road and its air bags had gone off. There was also lots of smoke coming from the car and debris everywhere.
“Everyone had come out of their houses to see what had happened and we realised that we could see cars in our neighbour's drive that had been smashed.
“Someone said it was our car and we had to look at the number plate to recognise it.”
The resident said their car was found smashed in the neighbour’s drive facing in the opposite direction than it was originally parked.
She explained that their car was a write-off as well as their neighbour’s car which theirs had ricocheted into.
Damage had also been caused to two other cars on their neighbour's drive as well as a car parked on the opposite side of the road.
The driver's vehicle which had crashed into the stationary cars, below, was recovered from the road at around 2am.
The owner of one of the cars damaged said: “It’s a concern because there have been quite a few accidents around here in the last few months and it won’t be long until someone gets really hurt. It’s quite traumatising."
She added: “It was a shock as this is a nice area.
“We have now got to wait four to six months to get an insurance pay out and we don’t have a courtesy car and I can’t get to work, and I need to get my kids to school."
A Dorset Police spokesperson said: "We received a report at 12.06am on Saturday, October 14 of a collision in Radipole Lane in Weymouth involving a car and a number of parked vehicles.
"Officers attended and a man reported to be the driver of the car was arrested at the scene on suspicion of a driving offence.
"It was further reported that the man resisted arrest and assaulted an officer. The 29-year-old man from Weymouth was also arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and a public order offence (using threatening or abusive words or behaviour)."
The spokesperson added: "There were no reports of any serious injuries, but the man was taken to hospital as a precaution.
"He was subsequently released under investigation as further enquiries are carried out."
