THE spectacular sight of a Spitfire flypast is planned for Weymouth skies.

People in the town will be able to hear the roar of the iconic fighter aircraft above the town next week.

It will be part of a Battle of Britain memorial service at Bowleaze Cove on Friday, September 15.

The flypast is scheduled for 2.45pm but is subject to weather conditions and aircraft serviceability.

The Battle of Britain Remembrance service, which is being held in association with Weymouth and Portland RAFA, starts at 3pm.

In 2020 a Battle of Britain memorial was unveiled at Bowleaze Cove.

It pays tribute to the 544 heroes who fell during the Battle of Britain, a pivotal air campaign that took place between July and October of 1940.

The project was the passion of Weymouth resident Rob Oliver, who spent the past 25 years helping ex-RAF veterans from 152 (Hyderabad) Squadron who served at RAF Warmwell during the Battle of Britain.

He set up a crowdfunding page to raise money for the memorial and was helped by many local businesses to bring the fitting tribute to life.
