An injured swan caused traffic chaos as it was seen strolling along a busy Weymouth bridge.

The swan was seen roaming free on Swannery Bridge as some motorists swerved to avoid causing injury to the bird.

Weymouth Community Safety Officers were called due to concerns over road safety as cars tried to avoid the swan.

The police caught the swan and transported it to a local veterinary clinic, with the swan taking a ride in a police car.

A spokesperson for Weymouth Community Safety Patrol said: "Our Community Safety Officers donned their animal welfare caps today.

"Reports of an injured Swan roaming free over Swannery Bridge.

"There were concerns over road safety with members of the public reporting swerving to avoid injuring the animal.

"CSAS arrived on scene and with the assistance of Weymouth Police, PC 217, the Swan was transported to a local veterinary clinic.

"Thank you to everyone that helped.

"On this very wet day, our officers were still out and about patrolling the usual hotspots. Happy to report ASB was kept to a minimum."
