The streets of Bridport will be filled with cheer and celebration this weekend as the carnival comes to town.
The much-loved Bridport Carnival procession will take place on Saturday, August 19 from 7pm - and the highly anticipated Torchlight Procession will bring an end to carnival celebrations the following day.
Saturday’s carnival procession will begin from West Allington, snaking its way up West Street, across to the town hall where the parade will turn into South Street and continue all the way to Morrisons car park.
Mayor of Bridport, Cllr Dave Bolwell, said: “Bridport Carnival is a major annual event for Bridport and attracts people from all backgrounds and from all around the local area.
“Like everyone else I’m very excited about being part of this colourful and vibrant traditional event on Saturday, and to the wonderful Torchlight Procession on Sunday evening.
“The whole town thanks the Bridport Carnival Committee, and everyone else involved, for their incredible work to deliver both events.”
This year, a bit of friendly rivalry is being encouraged as a list of awards have been introduced.
Those taking part can battle it out for the title of Best Pub/ Hotel, Best Sports/ Dance. Best School/ Youth Organisation, Best Club (adult), Best Overall, Best Costumes and most original entry.
The carnival is free to enter and those who wish to take part can do so on foot or with a float.
The ever-popular crabbing competition will return on Sunday, August 20 from 11am to 2pm with prizes available for the heaviest of five crabs.
There are separate competitions for under 16s and over 16s and the overall winner will receive a trophy.
The Torchlight Procession is on Sunday, August 20.
Visitors are encouraged to arrive at Bucky Doo Square at 6.30pm to ensure they get their torches ahead of the spectacle.
As dusk hits at 9pm, Bucky Doo Square will light up with the flames of torches.
Firstly, the mayor’s torch is lit, then he lights those nearby and it follows on, cascading through the procession until the final torch is lit.
The procession slowly makes its way down to West Bay, where the torches are thrown onto the bonfire and food and drinks are available to celebrate with.
There will also be entertainment available from local band, The Skalatans until around 10pm when fireworks are set to light up the night sky.
