A Weymouth community organisation has received special recognition for helping people in need.
Representatives of Help for Homeless – Weymouth were invited to attend the Mayor’s Civic Service to receive the prestigious Mayor’s Community Award.
Becci Newman, a volunteer of the group said: "It's nice to be recognised for the work we do as we are out there rain, shine and sometimes even snow."
“Our group was set up around 2009 and consists of dozens of volunteers who use their own time and funds to provide for those less fortunate.
“We feed anywhere between 10-30 people each time we are there, which is come rain or shine.
“With the cost-of-living crisis making life particularly hard for people, we have sadly seen a rise in those using our service.”
The community group consists of volunteers from Weymouth, Portland and further afield.
Members meet weekly on Thursday and Friday evenings in order to provide a hot two-course meal to the homeless and vulnerable on Westham Bridge at 7.30pm.
They also provide vulnerable and homeless people with other items including clothing, bedding, sleeping bags and tents.
The group cook the meals at their own homes and buy the ingredients themselves, although they are occasionally gifted Asda gift cards.
Food is transported using hotboxes and bowls and cutlery are provided.
Annerose Weiler, a volunteer from Portland, explained that the group has also received plenty of support from local businesses.
She said: “More recently, Summer Lodge Country House Hotel and Restaurant have provided meals free of charge every Thursday evening.
“Each Friday, Loose Moose Catering donate their unsold food, meaning our service users can take something away for the following day.
“The Nest Cafe also donate surplus food, and The Belvedere hold fundraising events to help with our costs.
“The Pet Experience donate dog food to ensure the dogs who visit us are kept well fed, and Weyline Taxis give financial donations on a regular basis, having been a supporter of ours from the very beginning.”
The group are always happy for new volunteers to join and any donations to be made.
