A week of floatable fun returns to Portland Marina this month.

From Monday, August 21-Sunday, August 27, the annual Portland Week festival will return, highlighting the issue of plastic pollution in the marine environment.

Events include daily beach cleans, mermaid activities, recycling workshops, kids sailing and paddle tasters and, the popular Folk Boat floating festival.

Paul Swain, Marina Manager at Portland Marina said: “Our relationship with Clean Jurassic Coast continues to grow and we’re proud to support the amazing work they do clearing plastic pollution from the shores of our UNESCO World Heritage Jurassic Coast.

“Portland Week is a highlight in our events calendar, bringing a huge buzz to the marina and it’s great to see the local and boatfolk communities getting involved in everything from beach cleans to recycling workshops and the most popular of them all, the mermaid activities.”

The boatfolk Folk Boat Floating Festival is a fun-filled weekend taking place from Friday, August 25-Saturday, August 26, full of music and laughter.

The floating festival is a music festival with a twist as in order to attend, visitors have to be floating, whether it’s in a dinghy or on paddleboard.

Dancing is encouraged, but organisers advise to be ‘prepared to get wet.’

From foot-stomping jigs to soulful ballads, there's something for everyone as they bob about in the marina and let the tunes wash over them.

The line-up includes Weymouth duo Subversion, Dave Burn, folk collective Grafitti, Jaunty and The Great Malarkey.

Visitors need to bring your own craft; paddle board, dinghy or kayak and for safety reasons no motors of any kind can be used in the area and buoyancy aids and life jackets are recommended for adults and compulsory for children.

For access to the pontoons to launch your craft, see the events team on the day.

Refreshments are available from on-site eateries Salt and The Kitchen with take away options available.

Other events taking place during Portland Week include a kids mega SUP session, kids crabbing competition and a Haiku writing workshop.
