An evening of musical theatre favourites will be performed in a stunning outdoor setting.

Wessex Musical Theatre (WMT) presents Songs in the Sun at the Nothe Fort in Weymouth on the evening of Saturday, July 29.

It will feature songs from the Beatles, Mary Poppins, Rocketman, and Motown the Musical.

The location is a familiar one for WMT, who first sang Christmas carols at the fort's open-air Victorian Day event, during the COVID pandemic and have returned on numerous occasions to provide musical entertainment which have proved to be very popular successes.

This year’s programme has been compiled by WMT member Tom Howden, who recently performed as Gomez Addams in WMT’s production of Addams Family the Musical at Weymouth Pavilion.

For this concert, Tom’s vision is to bring a mixture of classic musical theatre songs with new medleys, to showcase the society’s extensive talents with solos, duets, and trios interwoven throughout.

Working as musical director, Jon May once again brings his talent to rehearsals, challenging the cast with intricate harmonies.

He said: "I am excited that WMT are singing at Nothe Fort for the third consecutive year.

"Songs in the Sun has become a regular fixture in the WMT calendar, and we enjoy working with the Nothe Fort team to put together an evening of great entertainment.

"These performances allow us to embrace a wide range of songs from stage and screen that we might not otherwise get to sing, and they bring opportunities for new or less well-known members of the company to take on leading roles and solos.

"I love to hear the full company singing separate harmonies, and this year with songs from the Beatles, Mary Poppins, Rocketman, and Motown the Musical, it will be a real treat. I’m just hoping for a warm sunny evening!”
