A Weymouth community has become an explosion of crafts following the yarn bombing efforts of locals.
Southill is celebrating 50 years of Southill Primary School and a group of parent governors wanted to ‘do something for the community,’ deciding to 'decorate as a way of celebrating the school.'
Becca Sanderson, a parent governor at the school said: “There’s a group of us who are parent governors at Southill Primary School and we are trying to strengthen our community link as the school has always been at the heart of Southill.”
She explained that it was a ‘community effort’ and that Southill residents had come together whether it was in weekly craft sessions, after school craft sessions held at Southill Primary School which saw children, parents and grandparents all taking part and even people that ‘quietly made crafts’ of their own accord.
Organisers have been posting the creations on social media and have received loads of ‘really lovely comments.’
The crafts have been inspired by the local community.
Becca said: “There’s a giant dancer that has been created near the SPARK Wellbeing Centre where the dance lessons are held and a basketball player at the basketball courts."
As the Southill Primary School logo is a butterfly - plenty of them have been scattered around Southill, especially on the school gate.
Becca added that the idea came from another parent governor, Kate Carter, adding, “I was just crazy enough to go along with it.”
Sheena Chamberlain was another student governor who helped make the display of wooly creations across Southill possible.
“We are reinforcing that Southill is a strong community, and it will be sad when we have to take it down.”
There are plans for the reception children to go around Southill with their year six buddies to look at all the creations.
The yarn bombings will be on display until Saturday, June 11.
The group have also set up a Just Giving page to raise funds for a dedicated music room at the school as the children are currently practicing in staff rooms and if you wish to donate, you can do so here: https://www.justgiving.com/page/southillyarnbomb.
