A community has reacted with shock and sadness after a murder investigation was launched following the death of a man in Dorchester.

As reported, police were called on Saturday, March 18, to reports of an assault at an address in Milford Road. A man aged in his 60s sustained serious injuries to his head and was taken to hospital for treatment where he later died on Saturday, April 8.

Residents and councillors have reacted with shock and sadness.

One resident said: “It is just very sad really, for all concerned. I was very shocked to hear that he had died. We didn’t know anything until the police knocked on our door.

“It is a very quiet street. These kinds of things are always very sad.”

Cllr Barry Armstrong-Marshall praised the police for their investigations and added: “It is tragic that this has happened.

“Our thoughts are with the friends and family.”

Mayor of Dorchester Janet Hewitt said: "I am very shocked that something like this has happened.

"Dorchester is normally a very safe place, and something like this shakes you to the bone.

"I hope the ongoing investigation finds out what happened and who is responsible.

"My condolences and that of the town council are with the family."
