A salon in the heart of Weymouth town has won the title of Dorset Echo’s Best Hairdresser 2023.
Modern Barbers, on St Mary Street, has shown it is a cut above, beating out the competition to be crowned the number one hairdresser, according to Echo readers.
Sadie Laker, 38, attributes the salon’s success to its hard-working team and the decision not to offer appointments.
She said: “I think the main thing is because we don’t take appointments, people just come and sit and get their hair cut.
“People don’t want to have to plan ahead six or eight weeks. They can just come along and get it done then and there. It is just so convenient.
"The barber runs really smoothly, everyone gets on well and we have amazing friendships with clients."
An added benefit of not taking appointments, or even having a phone, is that the barber does not need to cover those extra costs.
They also keep things simple, by only offering dry cuts, which Miss Laker says helps keep the cost of haircuts down: “We just do dry cuts, it keeps things simple and the costs down.
"No phone, no appointments or additional things. That lets us keep the cost of haircuts down. Especially now when everyone is trying to save money any way they can.”
Miss Laker has been cutting hair since she was 15, and the salon has been in operation for 21 years. It has 10 staff, most of whom have been with the business for more than 10 years.
Miss Laker added: “It is really amazing. We didn’t know we were nominated so when we found out we were really pleased and jumped around the studio.
“We would just like to thank everybody who voted for us, it really does mean a lot to each one of us!
“The salon is always so busy and the girls work so hard! The salon really does have the best team and I am so honoured to have them all.
“Thank you again to the voters, the Dorset Echo for this opportunity and my amazing team for making the salon a beautiful place to work.”
