THE conversion of a former Weymouth church for community use has been approved.
No objections were submitted to the proposal for St Augustine’s on Dorchester Road – the building is no longer used as a place of worship following the amalgamation of local Catholic parishes in 2012. It has already been deconsecrated.
The Diocese of Plymouth told Dorset Council that the church was already been used, occasionally, for social events, including coffee mornings.
Situated within Lodmoor Hill Conservation Area it was built in 1835 and first listed as a Grade II building of note in 1974.
No comments on the change, other than the lack of objection from Weymouth town council are recorded on the Dorset Council website at the deadline for comments from the public.
A planning report said that community hall events will be held sporadically and would include get togethers involving morning coffee and evening gatherings which will be hosted by the parish and members of the community.
Said a planning officer report: “It is considered that a proposed community hall may impact noise amenity in the area. However, it is considered that the noise levels would be comparable with the activities of the previous church and would therefore not conflict with the local plan.”
