Weymouth Town Council has announced that it will take another look at the decision to cancel funfair bookings for this year.

As reported, the ongoing debate over proposed funfair bookings for 2023 came to an abrupt and unexpected halt last week, when a 5-2 majority vote by the town council's services committee ruled against funfairs being held at the Pavilion forecourt, except for the previously-agreed Easter holiday fair.

The decision also does not affect the previously-agreed 20 days' worth of bookings that were also recently agreed for the Jubilee Clock site on the promenade.

Councillors who voted against the fair made the controversial decision after attempts at a compromise - including alternative sites in the town - fell flat, as landowner Dorset Council said both the peninsula area behind the Pavilion, and the Swannery car park, were unviable.

But now, the decision by the services committee has been 'called in' for further debate and could see a U-turn when it goes before a full council meeting at 7pm on Wednesday March 8.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the meeting, which is being held at the council offices on Commercial Road, Weymouth.

The motion that will go before the full council meeting proposes that Weymouth Town Council agrees to reinstate the following funfair bookings on the Pavilion forecourt for 2023:

  • April 29 - May 1 (3 days over May day bank holiday)
  • May 6 - May 8 (3 days over Coronation weekend)
  • May 27 - June 4 (May half term, 9 days)
  • July 24 - August 31 (summer holidays, 39 days)
  • October 21 - October 29 (half term, 9 days)
  • November 5 - bonfire night, 1 day

Also proposed are amendments to terms and conditions so that the funfair can open until 10.30pm on event nights, and on other nights will close at 9.30pm.

Setting up/breaking down of equipment would not be allowed to take place after 10am or before 8am.

Funfair operators would have to reduce volume levels of music and announcements for the last hour of operation each day.

These proposed measures could be a potential compromise - but the outcome will not be known until the meeting takes place next Wednesday March 8.

The motion was proposed by councillor Luke Wakeling.

Councillor Wakeling said: "I was sat at the back of the Services Committee last week, and was very disappointed that committee members failed to discuss any benefits of the fair, or any compromises which could reduce some of the concerns raised.

"I'm grateful to the other councillors who have backed the call-in, and look forward to a better debate of the matter on the 8th of March. If there are any residents or businesses who have views on this matter, please contact your local councillor before the meeting, and let them know your thoughts."

Meanwhile, more than 100 responses have been submitted to an online survey being run by the Dorset Echo - with the majority of participants in favour of funfairs being allowed to continue.

A separate online poll suggests that a majority of our readers believe that the council will either change its mind, or agree to a compromise.

It comes after proprietors of hotels and guest houses, as well as the manager of Weymouth Pavilion, raised concerns about noise and anti-social behaviour.

Hoteliers say guests are losing sleep, and that in turn they are losing income, due to cancelled bookings - with some claiming guests are refusing to return.

Meanwhile the manager of Weymouth Pavilion said office staff at the theatre cannot work due to the noise, and that revenue is being lost due to reduced ticket sales for shows, as well as the theatre having to pay for additional security due to intimidating behaviour by punters at the fair.

The operator of Danters Fairs said the accusations are unfounded, and that his family business has been providing a high standard of entertainment in Weymouth for more than 30 years.

Do you think funfairs should be allowed on the Pavilion forecourt? No

Do you think funfairs should be allowed at the Jubilee Clock (Esplanade) site?No

Do you think funfairs should be held in an alternative location - and if so, where?Park and ride. It's underused and the perfect place for a fair and it's operators to pitch up a huge fair for the entire summer holidays instead of the awful gawdy thing we have usually. Or the Swannery Carpark where it was for years. With the screaming from those rides it's really annoying when trying to enjoy a quiet afternoon on the harbour.

Do you think measures should be put in place to prevent disturbance from noise / troublemakers?Yes but if it was out of the busy part of the seafront the yobs wouldn't bother with it.

Do you think measures should be put in place to prevent disturbance from noise / troublemakers?noise is all part of the funfair experience. Troublemakers should be dealt with by the police thats their job

Any other commentsAs a former worker for Mr Edward Danter snr. I can honestly say he is one of the most professional and considerate show people anyone is likely to meet. His equipment is second to none and the entire package offered is something Weymouth should be proud of and promoted as a major attraction and not criticised. Like all public events especially outdoors there are problems with anti-social behaviour, this is normally caused by a minority of local youth and their obsession with alcohol consumption. This is not our responsibility and needs to be dealt with by parents and police together.

Do you think measures should be put in place to prevent disturbance from noise / troublemakers?I visit Weymouth’ by boat about 5 times per year I can only sleep 6 people in the boat I have a large family and in the summer I’m joined by my children and grandchildren not enough room on the boat so we use local accommodation If you don’t book well in advance you cannot get accommodation on the front with sea view as there all fully booked so why hotels / B/Bs complain I don’t know there always full Most of the problems in Weymouth are alcohol/drug related not fairground visitors

Should funfairs be allowed to continue in Weymouth?Yes BUT at a different site

Do you think funfairs should be allowed on the Pavilion forecourt?Absolutely not. It's tacky, noisy and not a good fit with the Georgian Esplanade, a nightmare for residents living nearby and for visitors to The Pavilion Theatre

Do you think funfairs should be allowed at the Jubilee Clock (Esplanade) site?Only small rides that aren't noisy. It's horrible sitting on the beach listening to the screams from the users of the rides

Do you think funfairs should be held in an alternative location - and if so, where?Definitely another location. Have a bigger site than the ones they squeeze everything into now and Invite the fair to bring more rides. There is a lot of unused land in the town which could be used and everyone would be happy!

Do you think measures should be put in place to prevent disturbance from noise / troublemakers? The noise wouldn't be a problem if relocated away from residents and workspace. The fair should pay to have permanent security to deal with any troublemakers. Police resources are too stretched to deal with every troublesome teen gang.

Any other commentsThe council dismissed the Swannery carpark because of the fair damaging the carpark surface. Has anyone seen if the fair has damaged the Pavilion Forecourt carpark????? If it hasn't, then the fair should immediately be relocated there- where it used to be for many years. Close to the beach, bus station, train station, food outlets. PERFECT! Everyone's problems solved.

Should funfairs be allowed to continue in Weymouth?NO!

Do you think funfairs should be allowed on the Pavilion forecourt?NO!

Do you think funfairs should be allowed at the Jubilee Clock (Esplanade) site?NO!

Do you think funfairs should be held in an alternative location - and if so, where? The fairs should operate at all of the many and varied music and family festivals which are now so popular throughout Dorset in the summer season. The fairs would make so much more money from being there, but because they are in huge, open spaces well away from people's homes, they will not cause upset and distress to Weymouth seafront residents, who do, after all, pay huge sums of ouncil tax to WTC. ASB is also negligible at festivals.

Do you think measures should be put in place to prevent disturbance from noise / troublemakers?By having large police presence Weymouth seafront will appear dangerous and unwelcoming to visitors. Remove the cause of ASB (teens attracted by the noise and lights) Aby removing the fair. Simple.

Any other commentsHow dare councillers make decisions without having a full discussion with all involved !! If visitors come to the seaside then expect it to be noisy and fun . Why shut the fairs early ? Surely if youre on holiday you dont want to be in bed early ! Weymouth is in need of some extra attractions not less ! As for the Pavillion complaining what a c cheek! When Phil Say took it on the fair was already using that spot To get the Pavillion up and running many local people gave their time to help and still do ,free of charge Now its going well he wants to spoil someone elses livelyhood.. Not very grateful for the kindness shown to him . He regularily has local dance troupes performing there that helps pay his wages, those same children probably enjoy the fair . IF his staff cant work with a bit of noise they need to stop being snowflakes or get ear plugs ! We need to cater for all ages and that means our youngsters too . Do you think measures should be put in place to prevent disturbance from noise / troublemakers?Yes, but that should be all year round. There is no more trouble when the fair is down to when it isn't. I've witnessed the fair operators, stop people and ask them to leave.

Any other commentsI grew up as a publicans daughter in the 80's, I have many many fond memories of the funfair. There was the one originally in my era in the vicinity of the jubilee retail park. The fair then used to be along the seafront, yes people scream on the rides, yes there is noise, but there is alot of fun, alot of socialising and being together. All this nonsense about how there's all of a sudden anti social behaviour only when the fair is down is ridiculous. The council has taken so much away from people, it feels like they're trying to destroy anything Weymouth has left. I've witnessed for years, guests going back to hotels, b&bs etc, being problematic yet nothing is said about that. Same as drugs being dealt in the area outside the Gloucester, staff walk past and say nothing, yet they complain about a fair that has been coming to Weymouth for over 30yrs, giving enjoyment to thousands, adding revenue where people buy things from the shops, etc, for a small amount of time through the year? Absolutely Ludicrous.

Do you think measures should be put in place to prevent disturbance from noise / troublemakers? There is no noise from the funfair after 10pm. There are troublemakers throughout the town every weekend and there is no fairground for most of the year so cannot be blamed for that. Hoteliers complain about everything and seem to get their own way as they shout the loudest. Most residents and visitors love the funfair.

Any other commentsWe used to own a business opposite the Pavilion and never had any problems with the funfair. I still live in town near the Pavilion and seafront/harbour. We do have antisocial behaviour from the pubs and clubs sometimes, and often find men urinating in our back lane even during daylight hours, - and again there is no funfair at the moment so it cannot be blamed. I have never seen any trouble at the funfair. We cannot allow Weymouth to be turned into an old people’s home by a few hoteliers - and I am 70 and my husband 83. It is no problem going to the Pavilion when the fair is on, we walk round the outside of the fair and you cannot hear anything once inside.

Do you think measures should be put in place to prevent disturbance from noise / troublemakers?Noise control after 10pm We have trouble makers most weekends , this is a police issue, don’t try and blame it on fairgrounds. Twice in the last week we have had male urinators at the rear of our property off the harbour . No fairgrounds at present?

Any other commentsWe have a batch of new hoteliers, maybe they have yet to learn what holiday makers actually expect from Weymouth. Turn them away and you may well lose your living. Actually, whilst the occasional person may complain, I really don’t believe that a sizeable number of visitors do complain. And, good as the Pavilion manager has been, he is totally anti the fair because it is so close to his operation. That’s a very selfish view which is a shame.

Are you a resident / visitor / business owner / other?Resident and business owner, I was born in Weymouth and have lived here all my life, I m now 45

Should funfairs be allowed to continue in Weymouth?Yes they should, its a sea side town

Do you think funfairs should be allowed on the Pavilion forecourt?Yes of course, I take my daughter every year, particularly after lock down it was a an attraction loved and still loves to visit during the summer

Do you think funfairs should be allowed at the Jubilee Clock (Esplanade) site?Yes of course, I take my daughter every year, particularly after lock down it was a an attraction loved and still loves to visit during the summer

Do you think funfairs should be held in an alternative location - and if so, where?I think the locations so far are the right locations. They encourage footfall around the local business including the Pavilion which has become an asset since Phil and Lou have taken it over.

Do you think measures should be put in place to prevent disturbance from noise / troublemakers? If you take the attractions away there are still going to be a minority in Weymouth that will cause some level of nuisance through noise, drinking, drugs and anti social behavior, the same as any other urban area. By retaining the funfairs at least this gives some opportunity to police and control that minority, and also give others the chance to enjoy the area without stooping to other levels, by being simply bored with nothing else to occupy them. There was a time when the whole seafront was littered with amusement arcades, which yes attracted some level of troublemakers but also gave the teens something else to do rather stand around outside Mcdonalds which they do now, and to be honest they can make much more of disturbance in those areas, but no one is asking McDonalds to close their doors!

Any other commentsI feel the funfairs are a great addition to the town throughout the year and gives the town its heart beat, sprouting activity and life into the area. Without these types of additions Weymouth will become very quiet and sleepy which may suit even me as a local, as we do get tired of every where being so busy particularly in the summer, but that should nt mean we should kill off the same things that we enjoy about the town, as that would just be simply cutting your nose of to spite your face!

Do you think funfairs should be held in an alternative location - and if so, where?Poundbury has a large area. Carpark opposite mcdonalds at jubilee Park. You have rides for kids in Preston and arcades all along. It puts pressure on parents when kids can have a go due to cost of living. If visiting tourists have no option to feel the pressure to get to the free entertainment ie the beach. Putting it elsewhere then it's upto people to vere away if want to visit. Maybe just say NO for 1 Yr and review as cost of living crippling people and weymouth offers free entertainment for kids and families. 2p machines are fun but 2 or 3 pound a ride ie bumper cars as need adult.

Do you think measures should be put in place to prevent disturbance from noise / troublemakers? Not noise as finish at 10pm is fair but ASB yes. No fair less issues. Do we want weymouth to be known for all we heard was police cars or asb. I think it will put less pressure on police.

Any other commentsDon't back down to pressure. You will never win. The person who wants it on Fri, Sat and Sun for enjoyment will be at your offices on Monday for help with rent or help with family member ie social services. Can't help all.

Do you think measures should be put in place to prevent disturbance from noise / troublemakers?Common law states nighttime peace hours begin at 2300. Therefore there is no reason the funfair couldn't finish at 2259. Or perhaps a better compromise would be 2230, to allow for wind down & dispersal. I'm not sure what the current finish time is. But Alexandra Gardens is open late so what difference does it make if the funfair is open til the same time. Anyone wanting to participate in antisocial behaviour, will do so regardless of a funfair being present or not.

Any other commentsThis is similar to the issue around the quiet firework displays, where a minority of complaints are considered more important than the enjoyment of thousands. Out of touch councillors are ruining the essence of what attracts people to Weymouth. Ask people what it is that they remember most fondly about their holidays here and most will reflect on funfairs, fireworks and fish n chips or are the council going to close some of them down due to large queues or attracting seagulls. Come on Weymouth Town Council, life’s currently hard enough, leave us with something to enjoy during our summers.

Water slides etc can't go shopping no shops Soon there won't even be a sandy beach as it beech is moving --- re stantions at pavilion (cut backs re dredging) was able to swim out past pier now you can walk it. It is sad but this town is dying

Do you think funfairs should be allowed at the Jubilee Clock (Esplanade) site?YES!

Do you think funfairs should be held in an alternative location - and if so, where?Anywhere at this point!

Do you think measures should be put in place to prevent disturbance from noise / troublemakers?Well yes, but there will always be "troublemakers" AKA kids being kids! Unless they are actively vandalizing, stealing or being abusive to people, I believe that troublemakers will not stop unless they have something to do, and taking down the only form of public entertainment, is not going to help.

Any other commentsI am an 18-year-old Woman who has lived in Weymouth my whole life and hearing that the rides aren't coming back to the sea-side town just because hoteliers complain about the noise is much more than stupid. What is there to do in Weymouth for children over 12? Well lets see... Bowling? Oh yes! It's closed. The arcades? Where you spend so much money for a little amount of adrenaline when you win a lolly pop with your tickets that essentially has cost you £5 overall. Not to mention half of these "troublemakers" don't have jobs because they are too young or on minimum wage because of their age. Or the beach! Where you end up getting told to leave because they are "disturbing the holidaymakers". Weymouth is NOT a retirement town, its supposed to be for entertainment. Yes, we have the "Grandby play area", but for smaller children AND its expensive and annoying for parents to sit in a sweaty building while their kids play in a petri-dish full of bacteria. People wonder why teenagers are so disruptive and this is why. There's no entertainment for them! You also have to think of the parents who can't afford to travel far and rely on these rides for the summer holidays. Stop thinking about the Hoteliers because in order for them to even survive, you need to "sell" the town to tourists. Yes, we have the beach, but what about the families that come down? The children are surely going to get bored with sitting on the sand while trying not to lose their parents in the masses of crowds. Yes, the views are beautiful- but do you really expect teenagers to go on walks all summer long when they know that rides and entertainment like "Oxygen" exists? They can't just hop on a train to another town or city for entertainment because they are still young or can't afford the cost of travel. I don't think the council are really taking into consideration their young citizens and spending their budgets on buildings with no purpose whatsoever. If the town continues to go down here, respectfully, I don't think that this is an appropriate place to live, and I know many other people my age will agree. I'm sure I've missed a few points, but then again, this probably won't get noticed or read as I am just an 18-year-old woman or "troublemaker" as they call our generation. So I guess Weymouth will eventually get their wish of becoming a retirement town- because that's the indication that we are all getting.

Do you think measures should be put in place to prevent disturbance from noise / troublemakers?ABSOLUTELY. In reality, as was said in the article, Weymouth frequently has problems with anti social behaviour and The Town Council should be addressing this at ALL times.

Any other commentsI'm now well past retirement age and no longer go to fun fairs, but I totally accept that for many others both local and holiday makers it's a good evening out. Weymouth provides little for younger teens. When they're older they have the clubs, pubs and opportunity to travel to Bournemouth or further afield. BUT what about the teens. These councilors are a disgrace and need to start doing real work to earn their big salaries. Listen to the majority (the public) not a half a dozen dogooders sitting around a table. No wonder this country is in such a state.

Do you think funfairs should be held in an alternative location - and if so, where? If an alternative location can be found where there are no security or safety issues at all. The park-and-ride is very underused, but already a den of iniquity.

Do you think measures should be put in place to prevent disturbance from noise / troublemakers? If, by not having the funfairs, we address the problem, then we do not have to worry about putting measures in place. If we have the funfairs, then the funfair should pay for all security and cleaning costs out of their profits and the payment should be made before the booking is allowed to continue.

Any other commentsI think funfairs have had their day. With the increase in safety requirements and security measures needed, it seems the town council have to pick up the bill for somebody else making a profit.
