An investigation into what caused a fire at a school is continuing as the building reopens to students today.
Staff at Atlantic Academy had to be evacuated from the school during the fire, which occured just after 4.30pm on Monday.
Crews from Weymouth, Portland, Dorchester and Bridport rushed to tackle the blaze at Maritime House, Southwell Business Park.
According to a fire service spokesperson, approximately 25 firefighters were on the scene at the height of the incident.
Atlantic Academy was closed yesterday, Tuesday, February 20, following the fire, but headteachers confirmed the school would reopen today.
A statement from joint Principals Lesley Bishop and Melissa Heppell wrote: "We can confirm that yesterday evening there was a small fire at Maritime House.
"The fire service attended quickly to extinguish the fire and make the building safe. Thankfully it was contained to the reception area of the building and happened after school hours. All staff on site were evacuated safely.
"Following a one-day closure the Academy will reopen tomorrow."
A fire investigation has taken place over the course of Monday evening and Tuesday, however, a fire service spokesperson has said the cause is still unknown.
They did confirm that the fire was located on the ground floor of the building.
Six fire engines were on site at Southwell Business park on Monday February 20.
After putting out the fire, crews then worked to ventilate the premises.
Atlantic Academy was forced to close its doors for a day as fire crews carried out investigations.
A spokesperson for the school posted on social media on Monday evening: “There has been a fire this evening at Atlantic Academy Portland. Everyone is safe and the fire is now out. The fire service remain on site and has advised the school should remain closed tomorrow.”
Yesterday some smoke-damaged items could be seen at Southwell Business Park.
A picture frame and a badly damaged basket among other items could be seen outside the reception to Maritime House.
Parents voiced their concerns on social media, with some parents voicing their concerns about mock exams for some students.
One parent said: “I hope the damage isn’t too bad but my kids have their mocks this week.”
Another said: “What about year 11 exams?”
