AN EMERGENCY department in Dorset has warned of long waits for patients amid rising pressures on its service.

Dorset County Hospital's emergency department announced on the morning of Tuesday, February 21 that it was 'very busy' and advised patients to use alternative local services for non-threatening injuries or medical conditions.

It also encouraged those waiting for family members to be discharged to respond promptly when they are called.

In a post on social media, the service said: "Our emergency department is currently very busy. Please do not visit with minor injuries or illnesses, as you will face a long wait and be signposted elsewhere.

"Use a different service if your condition is not serious or life-threatening. You can use the 111 service, pharmacies, minor injuries or your local GP surgery. They will make sure you get the right help.

"If you have a family member waiting to be discharged home from the hospital or in alternative care please respond quickly to our calls."

It is not the first time the department has come under pressure this month with the service previously warning of long waits due to it being 'incredibly busy' in early February.

Minor injuries units are available in Blandford, Bridport, Swanage, Wimborne, Shaftesbury and Sherborne, along with an urgent treatment centre at Weymouth Community Hospital.
