PLYMOUTH MARJON 1

BRIDPORT 5

BRIDPORT thrashed Plymouth Marjon 5-1 to take their biggest away league victory since September 2019, extending to six games their unbeaten run.

Not since a 4-0 victory at Chipping Sodbury had the Bees earned a win by a four-goal margin on their travels, boosting them to 14th in the South West Peninsula League Premier East.

Bridport created a bucket load of chances throughout the game and saw presentable openings for Robin Jones and Sol Ayunga go begging.

However, one player not lacking the finishing touch in recent weeks has been Tom Richardson, and he rose highest to head home a Riley Weedon corner for 1-0, netting his sixth goal in six games.

Bridport gifted Marjon a chance to get back into the match before half-time courtesy of a trip by Malachi Stanners in the box.

Jordon Scadding had other ideas, though, and showed his skill by repelling the Jons’ spot-kick.

Bridport had only played a handful of seconds after the break when they conceded a softer penalty, Jake Childs adjudged to have caught his man in the process of making a clearance.

Theo Ramsey was unerring from the spot to equalise, but the goal only served to provoke the Bees into a match-winning purple patch.

Ayunga put Bridport back in front after stripping Marjon of possession and scoring, before the striker showed his predatory instincts by tucking home the rebound after Riley Weedon’s shot was saved.

Weedon provided Bridport’s fourth from another corner, headed in by skipper Luke King, and a cross-shot from fully 30 yards by Kieren Daniels flew into the net to wrap up an impressive three points for the Bees.

Speaking post-match, boss Chris Herbst said: “It was a tough game and credit to Plymouth Marjon as well, because they didn’t give up.

“In the last three or four games we’ve spurned chances. (Saturday) we made hard work of it but then we scored two, three, four and then it was done.”

On the scale of Bridport’s win, Herbst added: “It doesn’t come around often, especially from where we’ve come from.

“I’m really proud of the boys. Still, the lads came off the field a bit gutted because we didn’t play that well and still got a 5-1 win.

“It just shows where we’ve come from. We’re expecting to go into every game winning, that’s the mentality of the players and what’s expected from me.”
