Firefighters have issued a warning to motorists after a fire engine squeezed through an extremely tight space on a Weymouth road.

A picture was posted to social media which showed a fire engine driving down Franklin Road in Weymouth on Wednesday, February 8 with very little space between parked cars on each side.

A spokesperson from Weymouth Fire Station said: "In streets like these, thoughtless parking can prevent fire engines getting through.

"Every second counts when firefighters are responding to a 999 call.

"Time spent trying to squeeze between parked cars could put lives at risk."

The firefighter who took the picture said thankfully they weren't responding to an emergency at the time.

However, Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Service has warned that roads like these can cause serious problems for their emergency vehicles.

A statement from the Fire Service wrote: "Our smallest appliance needs a minimum of 3m, or the width of two cars, to pass safely. If you called for help, you would want to know we’re getting through."

"Poor or inconsiderate parking, even if only for a few minutes, can delay us during an emergency call and, in the case of a rapidly developing fire, every second counts."
