THE scene of a crash in west Dorset which left people with serious injuries has been described as 'mayhem' by onlookers.

A collision took place on Main Road in Mosterton between a vehicle and a number of pedestrians at around 8.13 pm yesterday evening, Wednesday, February 8. 

Locals reportedly rushed to the scene to provide first aid to those involved.

A man who was involved in the crash left the scene but was soon found and taken to hospital for injuries which were not believed to be serious. 

Air ambulances subsequently arrived on the scene and took three people to hospital with injuries with serious injuries.

One local said: "It was just mayhem. 

"It’s normally such a quiet place, so for this to happen it is just horrible."

Another said: "It sounded like a rattly crash. There were no screams or squeals of breaks. It’s sobering. Blue lights were flashing everywhere. There were at least three helicopters."

A statement from Dorset Police said: "Police received a report at 8.13 pm on Wednesday 8 February 2023 of a collision in Main Road in Mosterton involving a vehicle and a number of pedestrians.

"Officers attended along with the fire service, following reports that the car involved was on fire.

"The fire was extinguished and three people were taken by air ambulance to hospital for treatment to serious injuries.

"Following reports that a man involved in the collision had left the scene, searches were carried out in the area.

"A man aged in his 40s was located and detained before being taken to hospital for treatment to injuries that were not believed to be serious.

"Enquiries into the incident are ongoing."

The road remains closed and enquiries are ongoing.
