A WEYMOUTH church is to be converted into a home.
Dorset Council has approved the conversion of the disused Broadwey Methodist Church in Dorchester Road into a home.
No external changes are expected to be made to the appearance of the building which has also been partially used as a nursery school.
Drawings with the application show four bedrooms and two bathrooms on the ground floor with an office and study, a kitchen , separate wc and storage areas. On the first floor the plans show two further bedrooms, kitchen, shower room, an office and a store.
The church, which is believed to have first opened in 1928, replacing an older chapel nearby, closed in 2021 and has been empty since then. At the time of the closure decision the congregation had dropped to just four regulars.
Although marketed for community or possible commercial use at around £250,000 the only people interested enough to make an offer were those who wanted to convert it to a home.
Agents for the Trevett family, who have bought the building, say there has been local support for the conversion and no objection to the proposal from Weymouth town council.
The only comment on the application was from a neighbour who said: “I am pleased to support this application. Our biggest worry was that the property was going to be demolished and replaced with a block of flats of which we do not support. We are pleased that despite the agents extensive marketing the property has been sold to an individual that wants to retain the building and use it as one private dwelling.”
