SUSTAINED heavy rain and spells of snow that fell in Dorset overnight have caused widespread flooding.

Downpours have caused countywide disruption on the roads with several routes flooded. 

Some areas of the county even experienced flurries of snow amid the subzero temperatures.

In Weymouth, a road was 'just passable' in the aftermath of the rainfall. 

Radipole Lane in the Southill area of Weymouth was reportedly inundated with rainwater between Spa Road to the Causeway.

A statement from traffic monitoring website INRIX said: "Radipole Lane both ways just passable due to flooding from Spa Road to Causeway."

The treacherous conditions proved dangerous as one driver experienced in the early hours after a van flipped onto its side near Cerne Abbas.

The crash prompted two fire engines to attend to rescue the driver who had become trapped inside the vehicle at around 2:30 am. The driver was then treated by paramedics for minor after being safely extracted from the van. 

Further floods caused road closures on the on the The Moor near the A35 shortly after 12:30. Dorset Travel Map said: "The Moor both ways closed due to flooding between A35 (Puddletown / Blandford turn off) and Tolpuddle turn off."

In west Dorset, there was heavy traffic on the coast road near Burton Bradstock as a result of the flooding. 

According to Dorset Council's live travel map, there were delays and restrictions in both directions due to flooding on the B3157 Common Lane from Cliff Road to Bredy Road.
