GOING green begins at home for most people.
But efforts are being made at holiday destinations as well.
Two Weymouth holiday parks have joined the green revolution by launching some environmentally friendly projects.
Visitors to Haven's Weymouth Bay and Seaview sites at Preston may not be aware but there's a lot of work going on behind the scenes.
The company has spent £8,000 introducing water saving devices on the shower heads and taps in the caravans at Seaview - a measure that will cut water usage by half.
The adaptors use an innovative system which injects every drop of water with air.
Marketing manager Allen Main said: "Unlike restrictor systems this is achieved with no drop in the performance and comfort of the shower - in fact the performance is often enhanced.
"Initial tests have shown a potential saving of over six million litres of water per season at Seaview, leading to real environmental benefits.
"This system looks set to be rolled out at all our sites in Britain."
Other benefits of the system include:
- Less hot water meaning less gas needed for boiler heating, and consequently less emissions.
- Less demand on the supply eases pressure problems at peak times
- Less waste water produced
- Shower performance is not adversely affected by use of the kitchen tap
- Scale does not form as quickly reducing risk of bacteriological infections, as well as reducing the need for frequent de-scaling In addition, Weymouth Bay and Seaview have teamed up with the RSPB to implement ways to attract and retain various species of birds through new birdfeeders and boxes.
Meanwhile, shredded paper is being donated to the local riding stables for use as bedding for horses. This saves money and means the bins are not filled up as much.
Mr Main said: "As a big company employing lots of people we feel we have a responsibility to the environment which is why we are carrying out these initiatives. It's better for the planet and it saves us money too."
