A gothic studies specialist visited a Weymouth school to host an educational session on classic novel Jane Eyre.
Gothic studies specialist Dr Tracy Hayes visited Wey Valley Academy to hold a lesson for a Year 9 class on Jane Eyre, an 1847 classic by Charlotte Brontë.
The novel follows Jane, an orphan girl battling through all the obstacles that life throws at her, including her abusive Aunt Reed and the grim conditions of her school.
One student said: “This was an inspiring session where the text was contextualised as a gothic novel.”
Mark Chutter - who teaches Performing Arts at the school and organised the event - thanked Dr Hayes, saying: “This was an inspirational lecture, and we are fortunate as a school to be building links with the Thomas Hardy Society.”
Dr Hayes is a member of the Thomas Hardy Society, and this session was offered as an example of the types of outreach work with schools that the society undertakes.
