The service began with a prayer by retired chaplin Dennis Mould, which was followed by a rendition of The Last Post played by a bugler.

The crowd then observed a two-minute silence to commemorate those who have given their lives in the First and Second World Wars and other conflicts since then.

Michael Gill, Chairman of Weymouth braqnch of the Royal British Legion, said: "It's a pretty good turnout it is very good to see.

"It is absolutely vital. It is vital that we remember the sacrifice, not just of the First and Second World War but subsequent conflicts as well."

He added: "It is an important day in the life and the history of this country to mark that sacrifice, not just of those who died, but those who continue to struggle with the common effects of conflict - families and veterans.

"You only have to look at the names on the cenotaph to realise how many people from this country and indeed this town gave their lives in battle in both world wars."

Naomi Turner, Chairman of Weymouth Royal British Legion, said: "It is so important we continue remembering them. We haven't had a single year we haven't had a British soldier killed since Napoleonic times, every year there is at least one."

Sunday, November 12 will see Remembrance Sunday marked in Weymouth.

The service will begin, once again, at the cenotaph on the Esplanade at 10.58am, hosted by the Mayor of Weymouth Cllr Ann Weaving.

A cannon will then be fired from the beach by the Nothe Fort Volunteer Artillery to signal the start of the two-minute silence from 11am, with the Weymouth Salvation Army bugler performing the Last Post and Reveille.

During the service, the mayor will lay a wreath on behalf of the town's residents.

Military representatives, local associations and organisations will be in attendance, alongside MP for South Dorset, Richard Drax.

Following this, a parade including standard bearers, veterans, cadets and youth organisations will make its way along the seafront to the American memorial where another wreath will be laid.

The Esplanade between William Street and King Street will be closed to traffic between 10am and 12pm on Remembrance Sunday. Closure of the Esplanade between King Street and King's Statue will also be in place between 12pm and 12.30pm. Diversions will be in operation until the services and parade have ended.

Melcombe Regis, Park Street, and Swannery car parks will be offering free parking for people attending.

Remembrance services will also be happening in Dorchester, Beaminster, Bridport, Lyme Regis and on Portland.
