A drive-thru lane at a Greggs in Portland has abruptly closed.

A notice appeared at the bakery on Tuesday, November 1 stating that the drive-thru service would no longer be open for business.

The sign referred customers to head into the store to check out the full range of products.

The shop opened at the Osprey Quay service station in Portland in September 2021.

When it opened the branch of Greggs was one of ten in the country to boast a drive-thru service.

A spokesperson for Greggs told the Echo: "The shop has become focused on serving walk-in customers (rather than the drive-thru.)

"More customers are choosing to do over-the-counter purchases rather than using the drive-thru.

"It is run by operating service station provider Falcon Retail who will have made the decision."

The company confirmed that no jobs have been lost despite the closure of the drive-thru with other workers maintaining their positions within the store.

While the drive-thru lane service was open, customers could order their goods at one window from their car before moving to the next hatch to pick up their goods.

A spokesperson for Falcon Retail said: "We sometimes put them in (drive-thru services). With that shop we opened the drive-thru element a long time after the Greggs first opened.

"I think the customers got so used to going in (to the shop) that though a number of people used it it was nothing like we'd expect.

"The store does really well. Just as well as others but people just got so used to going in."

Greggs neighbours a Budgens supermarket, a petrol station and a Costa Express at the service station.
