CYGNETS have begun hatching from more than 60 nests at Abbotsbury Swannery.

Baby swans are also expected to emerge from another 100 egg-filled nests between now and the end of June.

Staff at the swannery said the boom of cygnets was remarkable considering the worst flooding in living memory washed away 80 swans' nests in March.

The centre also suffered an outbreak of Avian Influenza in January.

Site manager John Houston said: "We're delighted after all the doom and gloom at the start of the year that the swans are still here and have bounced back with a vengeance with a bumper hatching of cygnets."

A total of 158 nests are est-ablished at the site with an average of six eggs in each.

The swannery is home to the only colony of mute swans open to the public in the world.

Visitors are able to walk around nests built on the paths and regularly take pictures of cygnets emerging from the eggs from within a few feet.

The swannery is on the B3157 coast road at Abbotsbury and is open from 10am to 6pm daily.
