Celebrated writers gave workshops at a school to teach children how profound language can be and how important diversity is.

Wey Valley Academy in Weymouth held creative and innovative workshop sessions with poets John Agard and Fred D'Aguiar to celebrate Black History Month.

Both poets are very well established and have work on the GCSE Literature syllabus, including John Agard's poems 'Checking Out Me History' and 'Half-Caste'.

The writers gave presentations and guided students through their thoughts on how language can differ and take shape.

Both are Caribbean and diaspora writers with formative experiences in Guyana who delight audiences around the world with their improvisation and wordplay.

Mr Agard is a poet, playwright and short story writer and the author of 50 books. He has won many prizes, including the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry in 2012.

He said: "I was excited to help the students to teach the message around the power of language and not letting your environment or social situation to define you."

Fred D'Auguiar was born in London to Guyanese parents and grew up in Guyana and then returned to England in his teens. He is the author of four novels and eight collections of poetry.

He said: "The importance of expression through poetry in our century is critical - go and write your own."

A Year 9 student said "The sessions taught me about life and society and our different backgrounds and cultures."

A Year 11 student said: "This was such an amazing day and has deepened my intellectual curiosity and understanding around context within poetry alongside race and identity."

The day of workshops were organised by literary agents Renaissance One and Mark Damon Chutter a performing arts teacher at Wey Valley, who said: "This was an exciting day of eclectic poetry based around the themes of diversity to celebrate Black History Month.

"We decided to invite these poets as they are not only on the syllabus at GCSE but they offer engaging themes around diversity and inclusion.

"Thank you very much to John Agard and Fred D'Aguiar for their workshops."

Both poets also performed at Dorchester's Shire Hall later in the evening.
