A drunk motorist who was almost twice the limit when involved in a crash has been banned from driving.
Trevor Wadsworth, 61, was found to be over the limit on the A3066, Melplash, in August.
When breathalysed, he read 67 (microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath). The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.
Wadsworth, of Hill Close in Derby, appeared at Weymouth Magistrates Court where he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol.
Emergency services were called to a two-car crash at Crooked Oak Hill at around 10pm on August 14. Wadsworth was driving one car and travelling in the other vehicle was Georgie Marshall, her partner and three children. The family were going home to Bridport after a family wedding.
Speaking to the Bridport News at the time, Georgie said: “I just remember the loud bang. Straight away I grabbed my youngest and my partner got the other two children out the car.
“There was so much traffic on the road almost immediately after and people rushed to help us and the other car. I don’t know if the people who helped us that night were local or not but I would really like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to them – to everyone who stopped, I am so grateful. It was so kind and it made such a difference as we were all so shook up.
“The fire service were absolutely amazing. They arrived in minutes and were making sure everyone was ok. I am very, very thankful to the emergency services.”
After pleading guilty to the offence, magistrates disqualified Wadsworth from driving for 17 months.
He was also fined £103 and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £41 and costs of £85.
Speaking afterwards, Georgie said: “It was terrifying and all I could think about at the time was my kids. I still get anxious if I need to use that road as my mother-in law lives in Beaminster.
“Hopefully he will learn from this.”
